The social media ecosystem (Chris Brogan’s term) has sundry species. In the name of simplicity and things that are fun to say out loud, I’ve reduced them to categories that end in “-er.” Here they are in ascending food chain order. Which “-er” are you?
1. Abuser – You’re misusing the social media medium for one-way communication and spam. Stop being sales-y. Nobody likes you.
2. Loser – You are too lazy to learn. You are afraid of new ideas and technology. You prefer the ostrich method of coping with changes around you. Go ahead and keep your head in the sand. No one wants to talk to you anyway.
3. Listener/lurker – You’re interested in social media, but not participating in the conversation. You’ve discovered a few favorite thought leaders whose blogs you subscribe to. You’ve become their student, but they don’t know it. You haven’t ventured out into the daylight of writing your own content yet.
4. Commenter – You’re adding your two cents to the conversation, with varying degrees of insight and effort. In general, more thinking = better comments. Duh. Bloggers and fellow commenters alike will appreciate the effort.
